How to lose weight even if you're not motivated

Courtney Ley

Motivation.

Have you ever noticed how unreliable it is?

One day it's easy - you're large and in charge and can do anything you want.

The next day? Getting out of bed feels like the hardest thing you've ever tried to do in your life.

The gym? Sometimes it's even worse.

Do you find yourself thinking something is wrong with you because all those fit people at the gym seem to have endless motivation, where you don't?

Well I have news…I have met maybe a handful of people in my entire life who have motivation to exercise regularly!

And I’m definitely not one of the handful!

I have said it before and happily admit it now – I hate exercising!

If I didn’t have to do it, I never would. I get absolutely no joy out of it at all.

So what keeps me going?

Commitment.

Yes, it's a very boring answer but as I've found out myself...it's the truth and there's no getting around it.

Commitment beats motivation every day of the week.

Commitment to yourself and to your goals. The desire you have to succeed – that is what will drive you. That is what will drag your sleepy butt out of bed at 5:00am to go to the gym, or stop in after work even if you've had a tough day.

Commitment is what is going to get you back up on the horse when you make a mistake. When you think it’s all over and you may as well throw in the white flag...you get back up and give it your best once again.

That’s what you’ve done in the past right? Throw in the white flag?

One bad meal and the whole day is stuffed. Oh wait; don’t worry about the whole day, there goes the whole week.

You’ll restart next week?

That’s what I use to tell myself.

Then clients say to me…they have no motivation!

Good news…no one does! When I was getting ready for my bikini photo shoot there were so many times where I couldn't be bothered.

Didn't want to go to the gym, didn't want to cook my food...it just all felt too hard.

But I had a goal, a big scary goal that if I hit it would change my life and if I didn't...well I was going to look bad since I made my goal public.

So I found a new level of commitment.

Working with other women such as Krystal and Hannah, it only reinforced the fact - if you're committed to something you can and will achieve it!

If you rely on motivation? No chance because then you'll only do it when it suits you, or when conditions are "perfect".

This above all else is the key to people who succeed in their journey - dedication. The refusal to be just another person to ‘try’. Refusal to let anything stand in their way.

I know it may sound extreme, but this is truly what it’s about.

You don’t need to have motivation. It will come and it will go along your journey.

Commitment - now that is a must.

If you have that, you can’t fail because you won't let it happen.

If you've found yourself struggling for motivation, the best advice I can give you is to stop putting so much emphasis on it, it'll never be there when you need it the most.

The reason you started your journey in the first place? That thing you want to fix the most, the issue that keeps you up at night? (for me it was sick of being "the big girl" in my friendship group) Focus on THAT, focus on how much you want to fix THAT. Don't focus on doing things when you're motivated because you'll constantly find yourself going around in circles.
